DTC P104A Valvematic SDOWN Circuit Malfunction

DESCRIPTION

The ECM turns the power supply to the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly on/off. Normally, when the ignition switch is ON, +B voltage is constantly supplied to the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly. However, when a malfunction is detected in the VALVEMATIC system, the ECM turns the power supply to the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly off. The power supply is turned on/off through the shutdown (SDOWN) signal line between the ECM and continuously variable valve lift controller assembly. When the ignition switch is turned to ON, the ECM turns the shutdown (SDOWN) signal on (Hi) which turns the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly power on. Also, when the ignition switch is off or during fail-safe mode, the shutdown (SDOWN) signal is turned off (Lo) which turns the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly power off.
The ECM electronically monitors whether on/off switching is actually being performed in the ECM output circuit.

Trouble Area
P104A
The shutdown (SDOWN) signal line has an open circuit, or a short circuit to +B or ground (1 trip detection logic).
  1. A shutdown (SDOWN) signal line open circuit or short circuit to +B: While the ignition switch is off, even though the CPU in the ECM requests shutdown (SDOWN) signal Lo, the monitor detects Hi.
  2. Short circuit (short circuit to ground): While the ignition switch is ON, even though the CPU in the ECM requests shutdown (SDOWN) signal Hi, the monitor detects Lo.
  1. Open or short in continuously variable valve lift controller circuit
  2. ECM

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTICE:
When one of the following DTCs is stored and the MIL is illuminated, DTC P1047 is stored and actuator position learning is performed every time the engine is started. Also, after the system returns to normal, the following occurs during the first driving cycle: 1) DTC P1047 is stored, 2) actuator position learning is performed and 3) the MIL illuminates during actuator position learning.

Actuator position learning is performed when these DTCs are stored.
P1046, P1049, P104A, P1055, P2646, P2647, P2648, P2649, P264A, U011B
HINT:
  1. If DTC P1047 is output at the same time as DTC P104A, disregard DTC P1047 and proceed with the inspection.
  2. After performing repairs, perform the following procedures and check that DTCs are not output again.
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON
  3. Turn the tester on.
  4. Clear the DTCs.
  5. Turn the ignition switch off.
  6. Turn the ignition switch to ON and wait 5 seconds.
  7. Turn the ignition switch off and wait 10 seconds.
  8. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
  10. Read the DTCs.
