DESCRIPTION
The exhaust camshaft's Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor consists of a magnet and MRE (Magnet Resistance Element). The exhaust camshaft has a sensor plate with 3 teeth on its outer circumference. When the exhaust camshaft rotates, changes occur in the air gaps between the 3 teeth and MRE, which affects the magnet. As a result, the resistance of the MRE material fluctuates. The VVT sensor converts the exhaust camshaft rotation data to pulse signals, uses the pulse signals to determine the camshaft angle, and sends it to the ECM.DTC No.

WIRING DIAGRAM
Refer to DTC P0335 (RAV4_ACA30 RM000000TCW0AEX_07.html).
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction (RAV4_ACA30 RM000000PDS09FX.html).
1.CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SENSOR POWER SOURCE) |
Disconnect the VVT sensor connector.
Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard voltage:
Tester Connection
| Specified Condition
|
VC2 (3) - Body ground
| 4.5 to 5.0 V
|
Reconnect the VVT sensor connector.
| REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR |
|
|
2.CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VVT SENSOR - ECM) |
Disconnect the VVT sensor connector.
Disconnect the ECM connector.
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard resistance (Check for open):
- Bank 1:
Tester Connection
| Specified Condition
|
EX+ (B88-1) - EV1+ (B96-68)
| Below 1 Ω
|
EX- (B88-2) - EV1- (B96-91)
| Below 1 Ω
|
- Bank 2:
Tester Connection
| Specified Condition
|
EX+ (B74-1) - EV2+ (B96-66)
| Below 1 Ω
|
EX- (B74-2) - EV2- (B96-89)
| Below 1 Ω
|
- Standard resistance (Check for short):
- Bank 1:
Tester Connection
| Specified Condition
|
EX+ (B88-1) or EV1+ (B96-68) - Body ground
| 10 kΩ or higher
|
EX- (B88-2) or EV1- (B96-91) - Body ground
| 10 kΩ or higher
|
- Bank 2:
Tester Connection
| Specified Condition
|
EX+ (B74-1) or EV2+ (B96-66) - Body ground
| 10 kΩ or higher
|
EX- (B74-2) or EV2- (B96-89) - Body ground
| 10 kΩ or higher
|
Reconnect the VVT sensor connector.
Reconnect the ECM connector.
| REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR |
|
|
3.CHECK VVT SENSOR FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT (SENSOR INSTALLATION) |
Check the VVT sensor installation condition.
- OK:
- Sensor is installed correctly.
| REPAIR OR REPLACE VVT SENSOR |
|
|
Check the teeth of the camshaft.
6.CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS |
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Turn the intelligent tester on.
Clear the DTCs (RAV4_ACA30 RM000000PDK0WDX.html).
Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read the DTCs.
