Steering Gear Removal

  1. FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

  3. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET

  4. DISCONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

  5. DISCONNECT NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  6. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS

  7. DISCONNECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

  8. DISCONNECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

  9. REMOVE ENGINE ASSEMBLY WITH TRANSAXLE

  10. REMOVE NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  11. REMOVE STEERING GEAR HEAT INSULATOR (w/ Heat Insulator)

  12. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

  13. REMOVE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY

  14. SECURE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY

  15. REMOVE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

  16. REMOVE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

Steering Gear -- Removal



1. FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD


2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.


3. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET

  1. Turn back the floor carpet and remove the 2 clips and silencer sheet.



4. DISCONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

  1. Use a seat belt to fix the steering wheel in place to avoid breakage of the spiral cable.

  1. Place matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft.

  1. Remove the bolt and disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.



5. DISCONNECT NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Remove the clip A, detach the clip B from the body and disconnect the No. 1 steering column hole cover.

    NOTICE:
    Do not damage clips A and B.


6. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS


7. DISCONNECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

  1. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut.

  1. Using SST, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

    SST
    09628-62011
    NOTICE:
    Do not damage the tie rod end dust cover.


8. DISCONNECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
HINT:
Use the same procedure for the RH side as for the LH side.


9. REMOVE ENGINE ASSEMBLY WITH TRANSAXLE

  1. for 1AZ-FE:
    Remove the engine with transaxle (RAV4_ACA30 RM000001BC300NX.html).

  1. for 2AZ-FE:
    Remove the engine with transaxle (RAV4_ACA30 RM000001BC300OX.html).

  1. for 2GR-FE:
    Remove the engine with transaxle (RAV4_ACA30 RM0000019Y9015X.html).

  1. for 3ZR-FAE:
    Remove the engine with transaxle (RAV4_ACA30 RM000003PXM003X.html).



10. REMOVE NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  1. Remove the clamp and disconnect the steering column hole cover from the steering gear.



11. REMOVE STEERING GEAR HEAT INSULATOR (w/ Heat Insulator)

  1. Remove the bolt and heat insulator from the steering gear.



12. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

  1. Place matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and steering gear.

  1. Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.



13. REMOVE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY

  1. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and steering gear from the front suspension crossmember.

    NOTICE:
    Keep the nut from rotating while turning the bolt.


14. SECURE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY

  1. Using SST wrapped with protective tape, secure the steering gear in a vise.

    HINT:
    Remove and reinstall SST as needed.


15. REMOVE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

  1. Put matchmarks on the tie rod end and rack end.

  1. Remove the tie rod end and lock nut.



16. REMOVE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
HINT:
Use the same procedure described for the tie rod end.
