INSPECT TRANSMISSION REVOLUTION SENSOR (NT)
CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (TRANSMISSION REVOLUTION SENSOR (NT) - ECM)
DTC P0715 Input / Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction |
DTC P0717 Input Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal |
DESCRIPTION
This sensor detects the rotation speed of the turbine which shows the input turbine speed of the transmission. By comparing the input turbine speed signal (NT) with the output shaft speed sensor signal (SP2), the ECM detects the shift timing of the gears and appropriately controls the engine torque and hydraulic pressure according to various conditions. As a result, the gears shift smoothly.DTC No. | DTC Detection Condition | Trouble Area |
P0715 | When the transmission revolution sensor (NT) input voltage is either higher than 1.9 V or below 0.1 V for 4.5 seconds or more (1 trip detection logic). |
|
P0717 | All conditions are met for 5 seconds or more (1 trip detection logic): (a) Park/neutral position switch D input signal is ON. (b) Gear position is 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th. (c) Transmission output shaft speed is 1000 rpm or more. (d) The vehicle speed is 9 km/h (5.6 mph) or more. (e) Transmission revolution sensor (NT) value is less than 300 rpm. |
|
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The transmission revolution sensor (NT) detects the transmission input shaft speed. The ECM calculates gear shifts comparing the transmission revolution sensor (NT) with the transmission revolution sensor (SP2).While the vehicle is operating in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th gear with the shift lever in D, if the input shaft speed is less than 300 rpm*1 and the output shaft speed is more than 1000 rpm*2, the ECM interprets this as a fault, illuminates the MIL and stores the DTC.
*1: Pulse is not output or is irregularly output.
*2: The vehicle speed is 50 km/h (31 mph) or more.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
- NOTICE:
- Perform registration and/or initialization when parts related to the automatic transmission are replaced (LandCruiser RM000000O7H0HSX.html).
- HINT:
- After the repair, clear the DTCs and perform the following procedure to check that DTCs are not output.
- Perform the D Position Shift Test in Road Test and drive the vehicle for 5 seconds or more at 50 km/h (31 mph) or more (LandCruiser RM000000W790SGX.html).
- Check for DTCs again (LandCruiser RM000000W7711KX.html).
DATA LIST |
- HINT:
- Using the GTS to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time.
- NOTICE:
- In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not.
Warm up the engine.
Turn the engine switch off.
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch on (IG).
Turn the GTS on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
According to the display on the GTS, read the Data List.
Engine and ECT Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note SPD (NT) Input shaft speed/
Min.: 0 rpm
Max.: 12750 rpm- Lock-up on (after warming up the engine): Value from transmission revolution sensor (NT) equal to engine speed
- Lock-up off (idling with shift lever in N): Value from transmission revolution sensor (NT) nearly equal to engine speed
Data is displayed in increments of 50 rpm - HINT:
- SPD (NT) is always 0 while driving: Open or short in the sensor or circuit.
- SPD (NT) is always more than 0 and less than 300 rpm while driving the vehicle at 50 km/h (31 mph) or more: Sensor trouble, improper installation, or intermittent connection trouble of the circuit.
- Lock-up on (after warming up the engine): Value from transmission revolution sensor (NT) equal to engine speed

2.INSPECT TRANSMISSION REVOLUTION SENSOR (NT) |
Remove the transmission revolution sensor (NT) (LandCruiser RM000000OE406OX.html).
Connect the battery to the sensor as shown in the illustration.
Text in Illustration *1 Transmission Revolution Sensor (NT) *2 Ammeter *3 Battery *4 Magnet *a 5 mm (0.197 in.) or less - -
Wave a magnetic object left and right in front of the transmission revolution sensor (NT) tip (5 mm (0.197 in.) or less) to change the high/low signals while measuring the current.
- NOTICE:
- Make sure to wave the magnetic object during the inspection. The current will not change without waving the magnetic object as indicated by the arrow in the illustration.
Measure the current according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard Current:
Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (NTO) - 2 (NTB) Low signal 4 to 8 mA 1 (NTO) - 2 (NTB) High signal 12 to 16 mA
