DTC P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A"

DESCRIPTION

  1. For w/o ABS models.
The vehicle speed is detected using the speedometer sensor. The speedometer sensor transmits a 4-pulse signal for every revolution of the rotor shaft, which is rotated by the transaxle output shaft via the driven gear. The 4-pulse signal is converted into a more precise rectangular waveform by the waveform shaping circuit inside the combination meter. The signal is then transmitted to the ECM. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of the pulse signal.

For w/ ABS models. Yaris

  1. For w/ ABS models.
Vehicles that are equipped with ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) detect the vehicle speed using the skid control ECU and wheel speed sensor. The wheel speed sensor monitors the wheel rotation speed and sends a signal to the skid control ECU. The skid control ECU converts the wheel speed signal into a 4-pulse signal and transmits it to the ECM via the combination meter. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of the pulse signal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
  1. Various systems use the vehicle speed signal distributed from the combination meter. Check all the components possibly related to speed signal.
  2. Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.
1.CHECK OPERATION OF SPEEDOMETER
  1. Drive the vehicle and check whether the operation of the speedometer in the combination meter is normal.

    OK:
The operation of the speedometer is normal.
    HINT:
    1. The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer reading is normal.
    2. If the speedometer does not operate, check it by following the procedure described in Speedometer Malfunction for Hatchback (Click here) or Sedan (Click here).

2.READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (VEHICLE SPEED)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Vehicle Speed.

  1. Drive the vehicle.

  1. Read the value displayed on the tester.

    OK:
Vehicle speeds displayed on the tester and speedometer display are equal.

3.CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - ECM)
  1. Disconnect the combination meter assembly connector.

  1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

  1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    Standard Resistance:

    Tester Connection
    Condition
    Specified Condition
    D1-16 - A21-8 (SPD)
    Always
    Below 1 Ω
    D1-16 or A21-8 (SPD) - Body ground
    Always
    10 kΩ or higher
    HINT:
If the wire has a short, check the speed signal circuit in other systems related to the vehicle speed signal (e.g. radio receiver, power steering ECU, etc.).
