DTC P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A"
DESCRIPTION
- For w/o ABS models.

- For w/ ABS models.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
- HINT:
- Various systems use the vehicle speed signal distributed from the combination meter. Check all the components possibly related to speed signal.
- Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.
Drive the vehicle and check whether the operation of the speedometer in the combination meter is normal.
- OK:
- The operation of the speedometer is normal.
- HINT:
- The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer reading is normal.
- If the speedometer does not operate, check it by following the procedure described in Speedometer Malfunction for Hatchback (Click here) or Sedan (Click here).

Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Vehicle Speed.
Drive the vehicle.
Read the value displayed on the tester.
- OK:
- Vehicle speeds displayed on the tester and speedometer display are equal.

Disconnect the combination meter assembly connector.
Disconnect the ECM connector.
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard Resistance:
Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition D1-16 - A21-8 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω D1-16 or A21-8 (SPD) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
- HINT:
- If the wire has a short, check the speed signal circuit in other systems related to the vehicle speed signal (e.g. radio receiver, power steering ECU, etc.).

Disconnect the combination meter assembly connector.
- HINT:
- Disconnect the ECU connectors on the other systems related to the speed signal (but the ECM connector must be connected).
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard Voltage:
Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition D1-16 - Body ground Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 14 V

Move the shift lever to N (neutral).
Jack up the vehicle.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Check the voltage between the terminal of the combination meter and the body ground while the wheel is turned slowly.
- Standard Voltage:
Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition D1-16 - Body ground Ignition switch ON

Check harness and connector (w/ ABS for Sedan).
Disconnect the skid control ECU connector.
Disconnect the combination meter assembly connector.
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard Resistance:
Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition A76-22 (SP1) - D1-17 Always Below 1 Ω A76-22 (SP1) or D1-17 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
Check harness and connector (w/ ABS for Hatchback).
Disconnect the skid control ECU connector.
Disconnect the combination meter assembly connector.
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard Resistance:
Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition A15-22 (SP1) - D1-17 Always Below 1 Ω A15-22 (SP1) or D1-17 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
Check harness and connector (w/ ABS and VSC).
Disconnect the skid control ECU connector.
Disconnect the combination meter assembly connector.
Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
- Standard Resistance:
Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition A31-11 (SP1) - D1-17 Always Below 1 Ω A31-11 (SP1) or D1-17 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
