Valve Clearance
- CAUTION:
- To avoid the danger of being burned, do not remove the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Thermal expansion will cause hot engine coolant and steam to blow out from the radiator.
Remove the radiator cap.

Remove the service hole cover from the engine under cover No. 1.
Install a vinyl hose onto the drain on the radiator side.
Fix the vinyl hose with tape.

Loosen the 3 drain plugs on the engine and radiator, and drain the coolant.
Drain the coolant from the reservoir tank.
Tighten the 3 drain plugs.
- Torque:
- 13 N*m{130 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf} for the engine
Remove the vinyl hose from the radiator.

Loosen the belt tension by turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise, and then remove the fan and generator V belt.
- HINT:
- The pulley bolt for the belt tensioner has left-hand thread.
Disconnect the 3 hoses.
Remove the bolt, nut and oil cooler pipe.

Remove the grommet and separate the cam position sensor connector from the No. 3 timing belt cover sub-assembly LH.
Remove the 4 bolts and No. 3 timing belt cover sub-assembly LH.

Remove the nut, 3 bolts and No. 2 timing belt cover.
Remove the 9 bolts, 9 seal washers and cylinder head cover.
Disconnect the PCV hose.
Remove the 9 bolts, 9 seal washers and cylinder head cover.

Turn the crankshaft pulley to align its notch with timing mark "0" of the No. 1 timing belt cover.

Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rear plates are aligned.
If not, turn the crankshaft 1 complete revolution (360°) and align the marks as above.

Check only the valves indicated.
Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft.
Record the out-of-specification valve clearance measurements. They will be used later to determine the required replacement adjusting shim.
- Valve clearance (Cold):
- Intake:
- 0.15 to 0.25 mm (0.006 to 0.010 in.)
- Exhaust:
- 0.25 to 0.35 mm (0.010 to 0.014 in.)

Turn the crankshaft 1 complete revolution (360°) and align the camshaft timing marks.
Check only the valves indicated as shown in the illustration. Measure the valve clearance.
Remove the timing belt (Click here).
Remove the camshafts (RH Bank) (Click here).
Remove the camshafts (LH Bank) (Click here).
Remove the valve lifter and adjusting shim.
- NOTICE:
- Be careful not to drop the adjusting shim into the cylinder head.

Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to the formula or charts on the following pages.
Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim.
Calculate the thickness of a new shim so that the valve clearance comes within the specified value.

- N = T + (A - 0.20 mm (0.008 in.))
- Exhaust:
- N = T + (A - 0.30 mm (0.012 in.))
Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value.
- HINT:
- Shims are available in 41 increments of 0.020 mm (0.0008 in.), from 2.00 mm (0.0787 in.) to 2.80 mm (0.1102 in.).
- Refer to the new adjusting shim thickness table on the next 2 pages.


Place a new adjusting shim on the valve.
Place the valve lifter.
Reinstall the camshafts (LH Bank) (Click here).
Reinstall the camshafts (RH Bank) (Click here).
Reinstall the timing belt (Click here).
Recheck the valve clearance.

Install the timing chain or belt cover with the nut and 3 bolts.
- Torque:
- 7.5 N*m{80 kgf*cm, 66 in.*lbf}

Install the timing belt cover sub-assembly with the 4 bolts.
- Torque:
- 7.5 N*m{80 kgf*cm, 66 in.*lbf}
Install the camshaft position sensor connector and grommet to the timing belt cover.
Install the oil cooler pipe with the bolt and nut.
- Torque:
- 7.5 N*m{80 kgf*cm, 66 in.*lbf}
Connect the 3 hoses.

Set the V belt onto every parts except the No. 2 idler pulley, as shown in the illustration.
Loosen the V belt by turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise.
Set the V belt to the No. 2 idler pulley.

After installing a new belt, check that the mark is within the B range as shown in the illustration.
Slowly fill the system with engine coolant.
- Capacity:
- 12.3 liters (13.0 US qts, 10.8 lmp. qts)
- HINT:
- Use of improper coolants may damage the engine cooling system.
- Use only Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology consists of a combination of low phosphates and organic acids).
- New Toyota vehicles are filled with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (color is pink, premixed ethylene glycol concentration is approximately 50 % and freezing temperature is -35°C (-31°F)). When replacing the coolant, Toyota Super Long Life Coolant is recommended.
- Observe the coolant level inside the radiator by pressing the inlet and outlet radiator hoses several times by hand. If the coolant level goes down, add the coolant.
- NOTICE:
- Do not substitute plain water for engine coolant.
Install the radiator cap securely.
Bleed the cooling system.
Open the heater water valve while warming up the engine.
Maintain the engine speed at 2,000 to 2,500 rpm and warm up the engine.
Stop the engine and wait until the coolant cools down.
Add coolant into the reservoir until the coolant level is FULL.
