Engine
The engine coolant should be between the LOW and FULL lines when the engine is cold.
If low, check for leakage and add Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology up to the FULL line.
Warm up the engine, then stop the engine and wait for 5 minutes.
Check that the engine oil level is between the low level and full level marks on the level gauge.
If low, check for leakage and top oil up to the full level mark.- NOTICE:
- Do not fill with engine oil to above the full level mark.

After having driven the vehicle and in the case that 20 minutes have not passed after having stopped the engine, turn the ignition switch ON and turn on the electrical system (headlight, blower motor, rear defogger etc.) for 60 seconds to remove the surface charge.
Turn the ignition switch OFF and turn off the electrical systems.
Measure the battery voltage between the negative (-) and positive (+) terminals of the battery.
- Standard voltage:
- 12.5 to 12.9 V at 20°C (68°F)
- HINT:
- If the voltage is less than the specification, charge the battery.

Check the indicator as shown in the illustration.
- HINT:
- Blue: OK
- White: Charging Necessary
- Red: Insufficient Water
- HINT:
- As the belt tensioner coordinates belt tension automatically by its mechanism, you do not need to adjust it by yourself.

Check that the indicator mark on the automatic tensioner is within the A range as shown in the illustration.
When the mark is out of the standard range, replace the V belt with a new one.
Remove the V belt from the tensioner pulley. Then check that nothing gets caught the tensioner by turning it clockwise and counterclockwise.
When a malfunction exists, replace the tensioner.

When using the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool:
Connect the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
- HINT:
- Refer to the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool operator's manual for further details.
- Ignition timing:
- 5 to 15° BTDC at idle (Transmission in neutral)
Disconnect the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool from the DLC3.

When not using the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool:
Remove the V-bank cover.
Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the wire of the ignition coil connector for the No. 1 cylinder.

Using SST, connect the tachometer probe to terminal TAC of the DLC3.
- SST
- 09843-18030

Using SST, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3.
- SST
- 09843-18040

Using the timing light, check the ignition timing.
- Ignition timing:
- 5 to 15° BTDC at idle (Transmission in neutral)
Remove the SST from the DLC3.
Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
Install the V-bank cover.

When using the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool:
Connect the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
- HINT:
- Refer to the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool operator's manual for further details.
Run the engine at 2,500 rpm for approx. 90 seconds.
Check the idle speed.
- Idle speed:
- 700 +- 50 rpm
Disconnect the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool from the DLC3.

When not using the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool:
Using SST, connect the tachometer probe to terminal TAC of the DLC3.
- SST
- 09843-18030
- HINT:
- Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.
Run the engine at 2,500 rpm for approx. 90 seconds.
Check the idle speed.
- Idle speed:
- 700 +- 50 rpm
Remove the SST from the DLC3.
Disconnect the tachometer from the DLC3.
Remove the V-bank cover sub-assembly.
Remove the air cleaner hose assembly.
Disconnect the throttle control motor connector.
Remove the 8 ignition coils.
Remove the 8 spark plugs.
Disconnect the 8 injector connectors.

Inspect the cylinder compression pressure.
Insert a compression gauge into the spark plug hole (Procedure "A").
Fully open the throttle forcibly by hand.
While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure (Procedure "B").
- HINT:
- Always use a fully charged battery to obtain an engine speed of 250 rpm or more.
Repeat procedures "A" to "B" for each cylinder.
- NOTICE:
- This measurement must be done as quickly as possible.
- Compression pressure:
- 1,373 kPa (14.0 kgf/cm2, 199 psi) or more
- Minimum pressure:
- 1,030 kPa (10.5 kgf/cm2, 149 psi)
- Difference between each cylinder:
- 98 kPa (1.0 kgf/cm2, 14 psi) or less
If the cylinder compression in one or more cylinders is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and repeat procedures "A" to "B" for the cylinders with low compression.
- If adding oil helps the compression, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged.
- If pressure stays low, a valve may be sticking, seating is improper, or there may be leakage past the gasket.
- If adding oil helps the compression, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged.
Connect the 8 injector connectors.
Install the 8 spark plugs.
Install the 8 ignition coils.
Connect the throttle control motor connector.
Install the air cleaner hose assembly.
Install the V-bank cover sub-assembly.
- HINT:
- This check is used only to determine whether or not the idle CO/ HC complies with regulations.
Start the engine.
Sustain the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approx. 180 seconds.

Insert the CO/HC meter testing probe at least 40 cm (1.3 ft) into the tailpipe during idling.
Immediately check CO/HC concentration at idle and/or 2,500 rpm.
- HINT:
- When performing the 2 mode (2,500 rpm and idle) test, follow the measurement order prescribed by the applicable local regulations.
Check the heated oxygen sensor operation (Click here and Click here).
